Dry Ice

The Problem

Surface contamination of all types continually influences product quality in practically all production processes. Steel belts or press plates have been traditionally cleaned by mechanical methods, for example by brushing or scraping. The abrasive nature of these processes can cause surface degradation resulting in expensive consequences for an apparently cheap cleaning process.

The Solution

Dry Ice Cleaning is an environmentally friendly process that can clean a wide variety of components very effectively without chemical action, mechanical damage or abrasion. The dry ice simply dissipates into the atmosphere after the cleaning cycle is complete leaving only the contamination to dispose of. Berndorf Band has developed this process for use on steel belts and press plates and can offer it by contract through their Service Division or, if preferred, the equipment can be purchased.

Advantages

  • Non-aggressive and environmentally friendly cleaning of many differing surfaces whether as mill finished, ground, coated, chrome plated, textured, etc.
  • No use or disposal of permanent blast media, chemicals, detergents, acids or solvents. The only remains are the contaminant itself, generally as a fine powder.
  • Shortening or even prevention of production downtime for cleaning as many components can be cleaned on line, even the steel belts.
  • No abrasion of the cleaned surface because the cleaning process does not rely on abrasive action.
  • A universal process with application in many areas, e.g. Steel Belts, Press Plates, Dryers, Sieves, Machine Frames, Control Boxes and Mechanical, Pneumatic, Hydraulic and Electrical Components.
  • Safe for food applications.
Dry Ice Cleaning Process
Before Cleaning During Cleaning After Cleaning
  • The dry ice pellets are accelerated to speeds up to 300 m/sec by the compressed air and blasted onto the surface to be cleaned.
  • The cold dry ice pellets (-78,7°C) create differential contraction within the contaminant causing it to crack and allow penetration of solid dry ice.
  • Once within the contaminant the dry ice sublimes to a much larger volume of CO2 gas, which breaks the contaminant away from the substrate and allows it to be blown away.
  • Dry ice that impacts an already clean surface simply converts to the gas phase without causing damage or abrasion.

The Berndorf Band Dry Ice Cleaning System CSL 2000

The System CSL 2000 is available from Berndorf Band in two basic versions:
High Pressure CSL2000 Dry Ice Cleaning
  • A compressor (not supplied) should be selected to meet the pressure and volume conditions specified below.
  • The double filter unit removes both water and fine particles.
  • The dry ice consumption is dependent on the cleaning conditions, but optimally not more than 60 kg/h.
  • This equipment can be used with different blast nozzle for low pressure applications.
Low Pressure CSL 2000 Dry Ice Cleaning System
  • For use on general cleaning applications and particularly sensitive areas, for example electrical control panels.
  • Your in-house compressed air network can be used if it can supply 2,5 m3/min at 5,5 bar.
  • The dry ice consumption ranges from 15 to 30 kg/h depending on blast nozzle size and application.
  • The system can be easily upgraded for high pressure cleaning applications.
Berndorf Band can advise, either through experience, or by carrying out tests, which system is best for your cleaning requirements.
